HIGH POINT — As technology continues to improve, sleep products manufacturers are digging into creating smart beds that allow consumers to keep track of and enhance their sleep hygiene.
Over the past several years, consumers have undergone a monumental mind shift to recognize sleep as one of the three key pillars to a healthy lifestyle in tandem with exercise and a healthy diet.
Leading brands in the marketplace have all stepped forward in the past five years with smart beds designed to help consumers find the sleep holy grail. Tempurpedic, King Koil, Kingsdown, Intellibed, Mlily USA and vertical player Sleep Number all offer smart technology that gives consumers the ability to customize sleep preferences and check in on how well they sleep.
Tempurpedic’s Tempur-Ergo Smart Base combines the company’s advanced technologies including personal analytics with automatic snore detection and snore response feature. Based on ergonomic studies to identify optimal body positions for different activities, the base offers four factory preset positions. Other features include massage for added relaxation, USB ports and under-bed lighting.
The base’s technology tracks breathing and heart rate, as well as identifies sleep cycles, while users sleep. The technology then processes the data and offers sleep tips to help improve sleep habits over time.
Intellibed’s Sleep Genius Smart Base is designed with a variety of creature comforts, including a Bluetooth-compatibility, six-speaker sound bar, under-bed lighting, massage and charging port. The base works with a variety of the company’s mattresses, including Matrix Grand, which offers a cooler sleep experience with its combination of gel, foams and coil system for motion control.
“In recent years, the adjustable base business has been viewed as a fast and furious race to the bottom,” said Colin House, Intellibed CEO. “As a champion for innovation and technology, we’re on a mission to change this by providing consumers intelligent solutions that help them sleep better. The set-up is intended to act as an entire mind and body sleep ecosystem in order to ‘treat’ sleep issues, not just ‘track’ them.”
Kingsdown jumped into the smart bed category about three years ago and just updated its Sleep Smart system with a silent air pump and easier set up.
“The new Sleep Smart is designed for consumer interested in performance. If they track their exercise, monitor their health and diet, they should be as vigilant about their sleep performance,” said Frank Hood, president and CEO of Kingsdown.
King Koil’s Smartlife mattress, introduced two years ago, incorporates 80 individual cells and eight independently controlled zones from the top of the mattress to the foot. The mattresses offer multiple settings of firmness, allowing each person to accommodate his or her sleeping needs. Programming and monitoring of the sleep system are managed through an app that can be installed on smart devices.
